If you want to become a government contractor, it’s important to remember that all levels of government are not the same.
You’ll need to form a legal entity such as an LLC, S-Corp or C-Corp, as the federal government does not recognize a Sole Proprietor as a business entity, and will not award contracts to this type of business.
Make sure to check with the other levels of government you wish to work with because many state and local government agencies require you to be registered in sam.gov to conduct business with them.
Therefore, you will need to form a legal business entity with your Secretary of State and obtain your EIN (Employer Identification Number).

In most cases, these two steps can be completed in one week.
The next step will be to register your business entity in sam.gov, and once you complete this registration, it can take up to 90 days to receive your CAGE code.
Once you receive this, you are officially a Federal Government Contractor.
During the waiting period, you can register with state and local government agencies and begin working with them immediately, in some cases.
You can also begin working on your Capability Statemen for each NAICS code you will be looking for opportunities in. A Capability Statement outlines your company’s qualifications and past performance.

You can also have your company website made and create your company’s social media platforms. These steps are not required, but will add to your online presence.
